Don’t Fear The Reaper

Friday, April 6th, 2012

When I first started dating my husband back in 1979, he was perplexed that a fairly intelligent chemistry major like me absolutely loved a song by Blue Oyster Cult called Don’t Fear the Reaper. Perhaps you know the song I’m talking about – it’s the one Will Ferrell made famous on Saturday Night Live in a skit that involved “MORE COWBELL!!!”

George and I have laughed about it many times over the years, yet he still becomes clearly annoyed every time I turn up the volume when it plays on the radio.

It wasn’t until this week, that my attraction to this song started making obvious sense. I do not and have never feared death. My belief system has everything to do with not being afraid and in living fully by trusting that there is eternal life. My Christian upbringing gave me the foundation for this belief system, yet over the years I have also come to know that the Source of all life loves us and lives within each of us. Why would any soul be allowed to die?

Releasing the fear of death is the path to more vibrant and joyful living. Encounters with the spirit world and with God have assured me of this time and time again. There is nothing but love and healing on the other side. That’s the truth!

Don’t Fear the Reaper played on the car radio the other day as I was driving with my husband and I was finally moved to ask him why he found the song so annoying (as I turned up the volume) . His response was,

“It’s that guitar solo! What a cacophony of nothing!”

I just burst out laughing, making a mental note to work that beautiful quote into one of my stories for a speech someday. How funny that it took 28 years of marriage to get clear on our differences about that song.

The lyrics AND the guitar solo work just fine for me. I’m sticking to my opinion and the song’s message of life eternal. You can listen to my old favorite through the link below.

Returning to Spirituality through The Lord’s Prayer

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Yesterday during a coaching session, one of my favorite things happened. A client wanted to spend his entire session talking about spirituality.

This conversation started with his interest in exploring reincarnation and the afterlife. He expressed bitterness over being made to feel so insignificant and unworthy by the Catholic Church. His church and its leaders had left him feeling empty. As I heard his frustrations, I nodded and admitted having heard similar words from dozens of clients.

How does one respond to a person who has lost their faith? Is there a way to restore trust in God and the power of the invisible? In moments like these, all I can do is to share what I have come to know personally.

I urged this client not to dismiss his church so quickly. What jewels of truth could he take from his religion to comfort and sustain his spiritual life today?
• Favorite Bible Verses
• Stories and examples of Jesus’ life and teachings
• Special hymns and songs
• Priests, ministers and spiritual leaders who have inspired you.
• Favorite memories of church, holidays and rituals
• The Lord’s prayer

I mentioned that I had always loved the Aramaic translation of the Lord’s Prayer and promised to find a copy to send after our session. The Aramaic version is the energetic one that I carry in my heart. It is inspiring and so beautifully captures what I believe Jesus meant. This version also helps me to see how our modern version reflects the truth too. Nevertheless, I find myself in love with the Aramaic translation and share it below:

Lord’s Prayer
A Translation of “Our Father” directly from the Aramaic into English
(rather than from Aramaic to Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English)

O cosmic Birther of all radiance and vibration!
Soften the ground of our being and carve out a space within us where your Presence can abide.
Fill us with your creativity so that we may be empowered to bear the fruit of your mission.
Let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire.
Endow us with the wisdom to produce and share what each being needs to grow and flourish.
Untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us, as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes.
Do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true purpose, but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment.
For you are the ground and the fruitful vision, the birth-power and fulfillment, as all is gathered and made whole once again.

My faith goes well beyond belief these days. The knowing comes because more often than not, I feel God with me. I have been shown miracles and signs demonstrating that there is no limit to what can be created through faith. My beliefs may no longer fully reflect what I was taught in church, but God and Jesus are certainly fully present. I am especially grateful for the words that Jesus spoke in the Lord’s Prayer and will cherish these as my spiritual foundation.

More than a Fountain of Youth – Five Exercises That Change Your Life

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Betsy Demonstrates the 5 Tibetans

If you happen to be age 40 or older, you have probably noticed that your body is beginning to develop a few signs of aging. For some, it may be wrinkles, sagging skin and fatigue. For others it may be uncomfortable physical symptoms, forgetfulness, pain or a loss of function. Could it be that all these symptoms are really signs of energy imbalances or blocks? What if there was something we could do as part of our daily self-care routine to minimize aging and prolong our youth? It’s about time you heard about the Five Tibetan Fountain of Youth exercises! I stumbled upon them over 10 years ago and became a believer. They may be the reason I am so healthy and passionate about personal energy health. Here’s a little history about how I came to be introduced to this daily practice:

Back in 2000, shortly after my fortieth birthday, I began to think that I might be slowing down a bit, starting the process of aging, and beginning to lose my youthful assets and abilities. Some of the thoughts came from a place of vanity and fear, along with a tinge of regret.

As part of my job doing business development for an integrative medical practice, I was given the task of identifying the most popular alternative health books available. In my research, I discovered a book titled The Ancient Secrets of the Fountain of Youth by Peter Kelder. This book claimed that by doing five simple exercises every day, anyone could rev up their human energy system. The practice of doing the exercises would allow the body to maintain a youthful appearance and function, even though it might be advancing in age. The exercises were said to keep hair from turning gray! I was immediately intrigued and quickly made a trip to acquire the book.

I began practicing the five Tibetan exercises immediately. I did them first thing each morning upon waking. It surprised me how challenging they were considering that I been working out regularly and believed I had excellent health before adding the five exercises to my routine. I noticed that I was developing better core body strength and flexibility too. The exercises helped me to feel better and better each day.

Curiously, something else began happening. I began having strange dreams. It seemed to me that these exercises had evoked something beyond the physical. Something seemingly spiritual began stirring inside me and I realized that I was becoming very intuitive. I found this a little unsettling. I tried to dismiss the intrusive thoughts and the guiding voices that now had appeared in my life and which seemed to be speaking to me incessantly. I also found myself getting goosebumps constantly, as if my body had become a lightning rod for energetic information. This was all very new and a bit frightening to me!

The exercises changed my life indeed and if you choose to try them, you should be forewarned of their power.

You will find them challenging – please check with your healthcare professional to make sure you are fit enough for this type of exercise

Your side-effects may include weight-loss, better sleep, less pain, a trimmer middle, hormone balance, younger looking hair, more stamina and enjoy a greater sense of well-being.

You will become more physically and emotionally aware. Your body will bring things to your attention and you may find your emotions and intuition perking up. That is all good and nothing to fear. Be open and curious about it. Allow your physical and emotional awareness to guide your decisions and choices. Important clues to your life purpose will become clear to you as you continue your practice of the exercises.

I certainly haven’t answered all of life’s questions yet, but have found an exquisite sense of peace around the mysteries of death, aging and the potential for life eternal. Miraculous teachers, friends and resources have been placed on my path to guide and bring comfort. In case you are wondering – I am feeling younger and healthier than ever AND I still do those 5 Tibetan exercises every single day. I don’t intent to ever stop.

Ten Lessons from a Contest

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Recently, I decided to enter a competition. The Next Top Spiritual Author Contest was seeking spiritual writers and the prize was a big publishing contract. The first round of the competition involved posting an author profile with an audio or video book pitch, then asking everyone you know to vote. The 250 authors with the most votes on May 3 move to round two of the competition, and a chance for a big publishing contract with Hampton Roads.

Signing up was easy. I have a book in the works, Energy Makeover, which I am self-publishing for release in fall of 2010. I figured that a contest like this would be a great way to get the marketing buzz started and help me learn a few more things about social media. I also knew I needed to get more adept at making videos and wanted to try my hand at using my little camera and Microsoft Movie Maker to see what I could create.

Making this video stirred up all sorts of inner doubts, fears and turbulence in the week that followed. It was ugly, brought me an enormous migraine and introduced me to intense and unpleasant emotions that I am not used to having. How could I possibly call myself a self-care expert and the author of Energy Makeover when my own energy was spinning out of control?

The good news is that I got through it, posted the video and managed to make it into the top 150 authors on the first day I released my profile. The outpouring of support from my friends, clients and colleagues has been heartwarming. You can see my video and vote at http://www.nexttopauthor.com/profile.cfm?aid=799

As I reflect on this whole experience – both the highs and the lows, I recognize there are lessons here to point out. Perhaps they will help you with a big, ugly challenge you’re facing too.

1. Step Into Your Fear
Fear exists but need not stop you. Accept that it is there, then move into it with that first step. For me it meant turning on that video camera and recording. It meant doing what needed to be done, even if it felt scary. Just do it!

2. Serve Them
As I continued filming segments, I realized that it really isn’t about me but rather who I am serving – that audience of people who want to take better care of themselves and want some solutions to their imbalances, problems and symptoms. When you make the message about the customer or audience, you become a valuable player. That’s a more pleasant place to be.

3. Own Your Truth
I realized that my fears had to do with being afraid to reveal the real me, my appearance, and what I truly believe to that big unknown world of the web. What if my message made people uncomfortable? What if they think I’m too alternative? What if they dismiss or reject me completely? At some point I had to accept that not everyone will like or resonate with me and my message, and that is fine. I respect that everyone is free to have their own opinion. I will not allow those fears to change the message I convey. I am more effective operating from my place of truth. That’s where I’ll choose to stay.

4. Vulnerable is Okay
Putting a video up is kind of like going out naked in public. It is vulnerable in the most primitive way. I have learned that being vulnerable draws helpful people closer. They feel your pain & embarrassment. They resonate with your struggle. Your vulnerability makes you real to them and their heart soon lines up with yours. It feels scary, but it results in connection. I have had some marvelous conversations with some of my fellow authors this week as we shared our experiences with our contest entries. I soon discovered I was in good company.

5. Speak from the Heart
Passion is really what propels a message. As I watch the videos of others in the contest, that fire of enthusiasm speaks beyond words. You can find the energy within you to say what must be said and write what must be written when it comes from the heart.

6. There Will Be Set-Backs

Things will go wrong, computers will crash, files will disappear and batteries will die at the worst possible time. That’s how life is too. Know that something will probably derail you temporarily, and make the best of the situation. Take breaks, seek counsel and pray for a miracle. I actually lost the entire video the day I was ready to post it. The movie editing software failed to work and it appeared that all of my hard work was lost. I even took my computer over to an expert to check it out, only to discover that he couldn’t help the situation. After praying a bit more, I re-booted my laptop and miraculously everything appeared again. Divine intervention is always welcome in my world.

7. Persistence Pays
This was a bigger and more time-consuming project than I had ever imagined. I needed to learn to operate a camera, memorize my outline, utilize new software and make the final product satisfy my high standards. There were many moving parts and giving up was not an option. When you commit to something, stick with it till the end. You can’t expect miracles unless you demand a few from within.

8. Let Go
As much as I am a perfectionist and I could continue to edit my video for another week, there came a time when I just had to say it was done and post it to YouTube. It felt like jumping off a cliff without a net. My imperfect video went out to the masses as I gave it over to God to handle the rest. It was a relief to close that chapter. You can let go too. Is there something that you have been holding back until its perfect? Maybe it’s time to just put it out there and let God handle the rest.

9. Ask and Receive

Once the video was up, it was time to ask for support. Again, this was scary. I don’t like begging and bothering people. What if people ignored my requests? Again, I chose to just step into what needed to be done. I wrote to everyone on my email lists asking for support. I also posted requests of Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter in addition to having small business cards with the link printed so I could request votes as I met people at meetings and events. It was delightful to receive replies from all corners of the world from people I hadn’t heard from in years supporting me and complimenting my entry. It was an outpouring of pure love I had not expected. I embraced it and continue to do so as each happy response comes my way. It is important to ask for help and it is equally important to receive it with open arms of gratitude. What a wonderful feeling that complete cycle brings!

10. Enjoy the Ride
I had no idea how much fun all this struggle would bring. I have attracted new friends, renewed older relationships, humbled myself by asking for support and extended my network of connections through the challenge of this contest. People now know me better than they did and there is interest in my new book. The ride is now and I’m here having this great experience. You’ve got NOW too. Notice how your body feels and the emotions that accompany your story as it unfolds. You may want to write it down in your blog or journal to capture the beauty of the moment. Enjoy all that life brings you, the highs and the lows. All of it will transform your soul.

I Am Indigo!

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Over the weekend I was busy pulling together my PowerPoint presentation and handouts for the workshop I will be presenting at the 2010 ACEP Conference in San Diego. The workshop is about creativity, a topic very dear to me.

To organize my thoughts, I spent several hours in my sunroom going through all the notes and journal entries I have compiled while facilitating 8 different Artist’s Way with EFT Groups. It was fun to re-live each experience and to remember each group member who taught me so much as we shared, healed and grew as creators. Each one of them will be part of the workshop I’ll deliver on June 6 – “Release the Awesome Creator”.

I was particularly moved by something I wrote months ago in response to an exercise that require us to describe ourselves as a color. Of course I chose Indigo!

Allow me to share the paragraph with you:

I am Indigo -the consciousness that translates the light and energy of God into the practical physical world of human daily life. I am gentle as the night sky and as deep as the sea. A rare color in nature, possessed by only a few flowers and living creatures. Ushering in a new age of being and consciousness.

Choosing to integrate the color and the word Indigo into my business name happened rather easily back in 2005, long before I wrote this paragraph.

Indigo is a beautiful blue color that I wear often and look great in.

Indigo represents the 3rd eye chakra – intuition. My work as a coach, healer and helping professional relies on intuition more and more each day.

Indigo has within it “Indi” that brings to mind “independence” which was certainly the case when I chose to become an entrepreneur. It also contains the word “go” suggesting motion and forward movement. Those of you who know me will agree that I rarely sit still for any length of time.

Finally, I am fascinated with the stories about the Indigo children – these special little ones who have a sense of deep spirituality beyond their years.

Am I an Indigo in that sense too? Perhaps. I tend to think there’s some Indigo in all of us waiting to be activated. A series of strange coincidences, people and experiences activated the Indigo in me, yet I think my understanding and identification with this force was always there lying dormant, beneath the surface.

Thoughts and ideas exist before they emerge into physical reality too . Creativity is like that – a birthing of something that already exists. Our job as creators is to catch the divine download and bring it into reality.

The Mystical Maui Passage

Peaceful Women Maui Passage Feb. 7-13, 2010

Peaceful Women Maui Passage Feb. 7-13, 2010

As I return from 7 days in Maui with The Peaceful Woman organization, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for what visionary CEO Cher Bertrand has created. The Maui Passage is a retreat experience that opens, shapes and enhances the soul in ways that a series of healing sessions or day workshops could never attempt to match. This retreat places each participant into a concentrated healing space where experiences, nature, the land, the ancient culture and other women guide you into a state of peaceful authenticity. It is mystical and beyond words.

I thought I was very solid going into the Maui Passage. I was there to become a facilitator. Little did I realize that I would also transform. I return home with greater courage to be who I am. That means being open-hearted, vulnerable, deeply spiritual, and someone who commands the stage and stays in the game. As a result of the passage, I intend to do more work healing spiritual energy disruptions, mending the wounds left by “absent mothers” and taking others on spiritual journeys that involve retreat experiences in natural settings. I am committed to co-facilitate my own Maui Passage with 12 women before the end of 2010.

Here’s why the Maui Passage is so rich and powerful:

1. Ancient stories are woven into daily themes. Learning about Maui’s legends, symbols, language, nature and land provide aspects for reflection and introspection.

2. The women attracted to the Maui Passage are high level spiritual beings. Conversations run deeper, explanations are often unnecessary. We bond easily and respectfully. We become mirrors for each other as we help each other see what needs to be seen. It is refreshing to be so well understood. Professional and personal collaborations are encouraged. I anticipate I will be developing new business opportunities as a result of these positive connections.

3. Ample time is allowed within healing spaces for insight and reflection. Each day there is a place for time alone at a helau (temple/healing place). Messages come to us easily here. Maui is a place where the veil between the physical and spiritual world becomes very thin. We are permitted to live inside a peaceful version of the film Avatar. Messages from Maui include profound clarity and the answers that I have been seeking come easily to me.

4. Play is an abundant component of the Maui Passage. Play is a serious force that includes laughter, silliness, jokes, word-play, games and interacting with nature. Nobody has to take things too seriously. God smiles when play is involved.

5. Excellent mentors including Auntie Gordine (former Miss Hawaii, hula teacher and entrepreneur), Jeana Nauluai (physical therapist, native healer, Lomi Lomi Massage instructor), as well as our lead facilitators Cher Bertrand, Rachel Flower and Mary. Each of these women embodies strength, love, fierce femininity, abundance, balance and accomplishment.

How will you know if the Maui Passage is right for you? You will know it in your heart. Whether it is something I’ve written here or whether you find it on www.thepeacefulwoman.com you will know. My intention is to share more about this experience over the coming weeks as I assemble my photos, reflect further and begin integrating my new insights into my work and life. You’ll witness a new version of me and that will also be a clue for your own transformation.

I will be posting photos and comments from this experience on my Facebook pages in the coming days. Feel free to become a friend and share my beautiful experience at http://www.facebook.com/betsy.muller

Rituals for Success

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

“There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving… and that’s your own self.”

-Aldous Huxley

When striving for balance, both in life and at work, it is the small things we do within our daily routines that become the foundation upon which we build our long-term success. Whether it is the way we treat people, how we eat, spiritual practices or our method of regular self-care, the consequences of these small choices are immense.

Rituals are something we do regularly and easily. They reflect our beliefs, needs and values. Rituals are individual and are often habitual as these small actions become woven into our daily processes. Some rituals can work against you too. Awareness of routines, both positive, negative and our potential new choices is key.

One ritual I added to my life back in 2000 was daily practice of the 5 Tibetan “Fountain of Youth” Exercises. This 10 minute daily practice promised that I would enjoy greater flexibility, optimal endocrine/hormone balance and a higher level of stamina as I aged. After practicing the exercises for a few months, they became an easy routine for the start of each day. I could do them automatically without thinking. I could do them whether I was at home, in a hotel room or even in a tiny cruise ship stateroom. The benefits were measurable. I also experienced a much stronger connection to God and the world around me as a result of this practice, which was an unexpected delight. I suppose this was the real reason the Tibetan monks took on this practice so many hundreds of years ago!

On November 11, 2009 during the regular monthly Indigo Connection womens breakfast gathering we explored “Rituals for Success” as our topic. I called upon the women to inspire each other with the ways they add meaningful choices to daily life. Markers in hand, they paraded around the room to lively music, writing on posters to express and share their ideas.

I promised the group I would capture their writings and rituals here in the blog, so they might remember all these ideas, and also share them with people who missed the live program. Sometimes we forget we have the power to take on a few new ideas, even when it seems we’re stuck in a rut! November is a great time of year to consider changes before the holidays and New Year are upon us.
