Adventures with Hildegard – The Story of the Nun Habit

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

Hildegard of Bingen

If I told you that I spent the good part of the past week cooking with spelt, listening to chants in Latin, reading ancient translations and sewing a blue nun habit, would you be surprised?

I assure you that this is not a sudden infatuation. I am totally enchanted by Hildegard of Bingen, a Benedictine abbess who lived in 12th Century Germany. I have been in love with this little medieval nun for many years. A blog post about my connection to Hildegard written in 2008 titled “Grace, EFT and the Mystics” http://theindigoconnection.com/blog/?p=44 will give you some sense of how this all started.

Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was no ordinary nun. Undeniably one of the most astonishing female leaders who ever graced this earth, she was a mystic, naturalist, healer, visionary, poet, author, composer and artist. Through visions she received directly from God, she shared a wider vision of the world and helped humans to live in it more joyfully. Life in her abbey was FUN. Although she challenged the corruption of the church and was excommunicated during her lifetime, in October 2012 she was finally recognized as a Saint AND Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict. Better late than never!

My passion for Hildegard re-ignited when I learned of Matthew Fox’s new book HILDEGARD OF BINGEN: A Saint for Our Times (Oct. 2012). Going on Amazon led me to more fascinating resources – 2 films available on DVD, a cookbook based on foods Hildegard recommended for physical and emotional health, music recordings, ornate mandalas and wisdom on a variety of topics. I watched the films, listened to the music, read the books and cooked a few of her recipes.

As I marinated in all things Hildegard, some bold thoughts began to take shape. What if I could embody her as a character and share her wisdom with modern audiences? Her messages of mystical spirituality, faith, sustainability, peace and environmental stewardship are relevant today. A voice from the depths of my soul whispered “Finish the outfit” and I shuddered. I’m not even Catholic and here I am, considering taking on the role of a nun. Would this offend someone? What would I be getting into?

In spite of my hesitation, I set out to JoAnn Fabrics on a frigid Saturday in March. Once inside, I easily found a pattern, as well as a beautiful blue fabric that matched my blue purse. I was armed to create my first nun habit. (Note: you can refer to the previous blog post for the purse story, which involved faith and a few coupons.)

Now home, my first challenge was dusting off the sewing machine, which had been hibernating for over a decade in my basement. Pressing the pedal resulted in a muffled grinding noise, but no movement. Being a woman of faith, I said a prayer then scurried off to find some lubricant. Sure enough, a few sprays of WD-40 in strategic crannies got that baby moving. Praise God!

Now it was time to cut and sew the habit. Expecting that would be a piece of cake, I discovered that my trusty pincushion was nowhere to be found. I suspect my daughter stole it off to college, but lacked proof at the moment. What would McGuiver do now? I boldly scotch-taped the pattern to my fabric and used a few safety pins to hold things together. Not pretty, but thanks to this being a garment where fit was hardly critical, we would get by.

Once seated at the machine, the act of sewing became pure joy. Not many people know that I sewed most of my clothes back in high school. I could spend hours without food or breaks once involved in a fabric creation. The sounds, sensations and the delicious smell of pattern, fabric and sewing machine oil had collided to delivered pure bliss. Thank you Hildegard for returning me to a wonderful hobby ignored far too long.

Each piece of the costume came into being: first the dress, then the contrasting white head piece with collar, and finally the veil. I finished pressing the final seam with deep satisfaction thinking, “It doesn’t matter if I ever wear this habit”. The simple experience of sewing had already been enough.

I see Hildegard looking back at me from the mirror and can only thank her for allowing me to see that we are kindred spirits, travelers from different times. Sewing the habit gave me the courage and full vision for sharing her message more widely. I quickly jotted down the ideas and sent an invitation for a day retreat called How to Thrive as a Modern Mystic – Energy Makeover® Lessons from Saint Hildegard of Bingen to my email list. Within just a few minutes, 8 women had enrolled and paid in full. Given that the event wasn’t even happening until May 17, I was impressed at how the message of Hildegard had resonated with my friends and colleagues. More importantly, I know today’s Hildegard will bring a new spark of fun to her mystical message. I bet Hildegard would have adored email and social media if it were available in her day.

Not a single soul (besides me) has seen Betsy as a blue nun. Not even my husband, although he knew I was working on it and texted a simple “oooh baby”, then suggestively requested I sew him a Pope outfit. We’ll see about that later. Perhaps that will be our plan for Halloween.

Could YOU benefit from more stamina, courage and intuition? Here’s what Hildegard has promised for the May 17 group:
• Sample Hildegard’s “Foods of Joy”- Find out how they are also slimming and take home recipes to fuel joy
to your life.
• Experience mystical visions through meditation facilitated by Hildegard’s music and mandalas.
• Play in the Garden – Explore healing herbs, get grounded and quiet your soul through a planting activity.
• Capture your insights through journaling.
• Go deeper into understanding your unique gifts as a healer, mystic and leader.
• Experiment with your intuition among supportive friends.
• Develop an action plan for living as a mystic in YOUR life, home and business

You can go to the link below for details to join us on May 17. Four spots remain, however if you miss this event, I am happy to deliver this program to your group at a later time. I suspect Hildegard will enjoy meeting many people in her new outfit. Good thing she has a matching purse and shoes!

Visual Memories from the Lakeside Women’s Retreat (Video)

Monday, May 28th, 2012

A wonderful time was had by all May 18-20 at Lakeside. Warm weather, sun, spontaneity, great food and excellent presentations contributed to the bonding. We did Tai Chi on the dock this year and watched the film Get Real – Wise Women Speak! We played and journaled in the new Energy Makeover Journal too. A highlight of the weekend was getting to see a mamma fox and her five little puppies. Enjoy this photo memory and join us next year when we do it again, May 17-19.

Miracles Big and Small

Sunday, May 27th, 2012

Webster’s dictionary has three definitions for the word miracle

1. an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs
2. an extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment
3. a divinely natural phenomenon experienced humanly as the fulfillment of spiritual law

Are you someone who believes in miracles? Do you pay attention and keep track of the miracles that cross your path? Do you often count small coincidences as miracles? If you live like your life is full of miracles, you may just notice more miracles appearing. That’s how the Law of Attraction works.

I find myself noticing lots of coinidences. Last weekend while hosting a women’s retreat at Lakeside, it was astounding to me how miracles kept rolling in like waves to the shoreline. Allow me to share my favorite three below:

1. The plumber I hired arrived to remedy a problem at the Lakeside house where our presenters would be staying arrived exactly at the time I had been told to expect him AND finished the job completely within 10 minutes. (I know, you might say that wasn’t a miracle, but my experience with other service calls tells me it is clearly a #2 variety miracle)

2. While taking a spontaneous walk, I met up with Carmel Lapa, who had also just arrived in Lakeside. Within 3 minutes of meeting Carmel, Jenny Earley also appeared on the path. Carmel mentioned wishing she had some coffee. Since I had some hot coffee in a caraffe back at my house, we agreed to walk in that direction. While we walked, I shared that a family of foxes had been spotted recently near 3rd street. We chose to take a route down 3rd so that we might see them. Sure enough, we heard some rustling and soon found 4 kits and the mother playing in a garden on Plum Street near 3rd. What a joy it was to watch these little babies romp, tumble and entertain us for a full 10 minutes, oblivious to our gaze. The coincidences that brought the three of us to that place and that outstanding sight qualifies as a #2 miracle as well. Coincidentally, nearly all of the other retreat participants saw the foxes during a morning walk the following day. Many photos and a video were taken to document this joyful experience

3. On Saturday morning, our agenda included a class in Tai Chi. Because the weather was so warm and beautiful, our instructor Roseann chose to move class to the Lakeside Dock. There were very few people out at this time of day, which provided a peaceful setting for our class. As we began moving to Roseann’s instructions, the sound of a beautiful violin solo came soaring on the breeze from a man playing on a bench along the lake. We had the perfect musical accompanyment for the movement of chi. Curiously, only 2 minutes after our class ended, the violin ceased and the dock area filled with busloads of boisterous teenagers visiting Lakeside for a band concert. Had they arrived any sooner, it would not have been the same relaxing experience. Divine timing had worked to perfection! This certainly felt like at #1 miracle, although some might call it a coincidence.

I’ll just go out on a limb and say that all of the above are #1 category miracles. I’m one of those people who chooses to know that a Divine power is at work in all things. My prayers invite the Divine to play and create in my world. Not every prayer is answered, however it would appear that many are.

Shortly after returning from the retreat, I recieved news that the son of one of my dearest friends had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. I am hurting for my friend and her family as they face the tests and medical interventions ahead. Is this too, just another Divine intervention taking place in our physical world? I assure myself that there is a bigger picture at work and that yet another miracle is unfolding.

Take Yourself AWAY – Rest, Reflect and Connect with Your Inner Wisdom

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

In just two days, I will be boarding a plane to consciously escape routines, work, obligations and this damp Ohio winter. This trip has been on the calendar for 12 months as a priority, but it wasn’t until this week that I so suddenly realized how badly I needed it. You see, I have been one very busy lady in these first 2 months of 2012 — creating a new web site, launching my bestselling book, traveling to Columbus for NSA Protrack professional speaker training, giving new speeches all around town and delivering new classes too. All this new stuff! No wonder my head spins. Funny how someone who teachings the wonders of energy self-care and balance finds herself out of breath more often than she likes! That’s life isn’t it?

What have I learned from all of this that can help you?

Plan your escapes, before you know you will need them. So glad I chose to book my vacation so long ago. Take a look at your calendar TODAY and see what you might choose to plan for a restorative vacation, long weekend or mini-retreat. Hold that date now and make the necessary reservations. This is a worthy act of self-love and self-care.

Pace your goals and accomplishments so that everything doesn’t hit at once. This is a virtue and an art. As I mentioned, it is something I personally need to work on!

Give yourself space to rest, reflect and connect with your wise inner advisor. Creativity flows when you take time to get away. Don’t think this must be a vacation. Morning journal time or a nice walk in nature is ideal for this kind of mini escape too.

Invite others to escape with you. Are you hearing stories of stress and exhaustion from friends or family members you care about? How about instigating something fun and restorative for both of you? Imagine the beautiful bonds of friendship that can be nurtured through escape. Pick up the phone and get this conversation started.

Don’t let an extreme spiritual or physical crisis bring you to the point of finally take that time off. Choose to say “no”, “later” or “next time” and own your calendar when it comes to that escape.

If you are a woman who needs an escape soon, consider joining me May 18-20 at Lakeside on Lake Erie (a magical place I wrote about in my book) for an escape. There’s even an option to come up for a single day in case your life is extra hectic. Send an email to betsy@theindigoconnection.com if you would like the details.

Interesting Day – The Law of Attraction Strikes Again!

Friday, July 29th, 2011

At noon today I was busy loading my car, preparing for a short 75 minute drive home after 3 delightful days in Lakeside at my parent’s cottage. I’m always sad to leave and expressed my regret as I hugged my sister Suzanne goodbye. Lucky Suzanne gets to stay here another week. I reminded her as I headed out the door that John Ford Coley was the entertainment tonight and that she better go see him because I loved those song he did with England Dan back in the 70′s “Really Want to See You Tonight” and “Nights are Forever Without You”.

Gracie and I hopped in the car, started the engine and all seemed just fine until I reached the first stop sign and noticed that ALL of my warning lights, including “Check Engine” were on. With major storms predicted and a big dog in the car, I decided that it was silly to risk a breakdown on the highway. I returned to the cottage and arranged for a tow truck to take my RAV4 to the dealer in Sandusky. I called my husband George to alert him to the change of plans. He said he would come up to Lakeside after work if I needed a ride.

Immediately I realized the big grin on my face. I am safe and connected to the help I need. My car will be fine and I have free towing too! Better yet, I had somehow gotten what my heart had asked for weeks ago when I saw that John Ford Coley was playing at Lakeside on July 29. I thought it would be nice if George could come up after work on Friday for the show, but he had resisted the idea and I let it go at the time.

I am now more aware of the words to that song I’ve been humming all day. They have some very powerful energy!

I really want to see you tonight…….nights are forever without you!

Stay tuned for a follow-up on how this day really ends.

Memories of May Lakeside Retreat 2011 (and a fun Video!)

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Every year I say it was the best yet, and each year I wonder how we can top the year before. Once again, a pleasant and healing weekend was had by all. I am grateful for the women who chose to have this experience, for their respect for our presenters, their great job at setting their own boundaries and the leadership demonstrated by our alumni in attendance. You show me the love and harmony that is so possible in a complicated world.

This is the alternate video version with new music YouTube suggested.

Retreat, Re-Entry, Reveal and Radiate!

Monday, May 16th, 2011

The Indigo Connection’s 5th annual retreat has concluded and it was our best yet. These intelligent, curious, spiritually-inclined women took on the weekend for a wide variety of reasons and came away with what they needed because they chose well, accepted the messages, and helped one another process challenges as they courageously let their hearts open up – to love themselves more purely and to extend that love to others. As we conclude each year, I caution that traveling out into the real world with an open heart can be both vulnerable and exhilarating. An open heart can be broken, yet an open heart has the power to create miracles, facilitate connections and exert an amazing influence. I advise that they be gentle on themselves, asking for an extra “Diamond Shield™” of protection – transparent, hard and sparkling. The open, shielded heart sends, attracts and receives infinitely!

I too am mindful of my need to carefully re-enter the bigger world I return to. I planned to stop at my favorite nursery in Huron, Mulberry Creek Herb Farm, on my drive home. It was lovely to make this stop at a time when this lovely organic nursery was slow due to the rain and chilly temperature.

It was a treat to reconnect with Karen, the owner of this family operation and a true friend. Our love of plants, nature and a good laugh is something that allows us to connect easily. I was grateful she had time to talk and catch up with me. On this wet Sunday, I also met JoAnne, an employee there who waited on me as I was checking out. JoAnne had been listening to my conversation with Karen as she worked nearby. When I approached the counter, we began light conversation about the retreat. I revealed that I work with energy and the human soul. JoAnne then shared that she had recently lost her husband to cancer. Immediately our connection deepened.

JoAnne and I shared a long and precious conversation about grief, letting go, pets and loss. It reminds me that because I opened to reveal myself, it allowed an opening for her reveal as well. What did she see in me to share so much with a stranger? She must have felt safe as she saw the presence and respect in my eyes. She experienced the entrainment of my heart as it reached out to hers. She let down her guard to a stranger, and by doing so she amplified her own heart signal as she shared her truth.

JoAnne’s curiosity about the spirit world prompted me to recommend a few excellent books, including Journey of Souls by Michael Newton PhD. She eagerly jotted these down as I completed my purchase.

JoAnne helped me to the car with my plants and thanked me, as her eyes filled with tears. We exchanged a big hug – former strangers now connected at the heart. Was my radiance amplified because of the retreat? Of course it was! Had God created a divine moment for this energy to make a difference for JoAnne? Undeniably YES.

I wonder what the rest of my retreat partners experienced as they returned home? I suspect it was amazing too.

Go Away! The Healing Power of Escape

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

“Sometimes you must go away to find yourself and a true sense of peace”

I remember a time in early 2005 when I “hit the wall” – a term runners use to describe the sudden fatigue that hits so solidly that it makes it impossible to take another step. In my case, when this happened I realized that I was so worn-out that I needed to quit my job. I needed an extreme escape, but didn’t have the energy to plan anything elaborate. All I could come up with at that time was the promise to spend the next 30 days sleeping in, painting baseboards (the most mundane yet productive thing I could think of) and trying to find what was left of “worn out” me. I was smart enough then to know I needed to be in better form if I was to be inspired and guided to a better way of being.

I survived that rough spell and found some new tools to help me thrive. Today I run on a steady stream of high energy that allows me to be a leader in helping others heal, have fun and connect more fully to the world around them. Healthy escapes are fundamental pieces of my Healer/Coach tool-kit when working the energy and life-balance equation. In my experience they offer opportunities for enormous jumps in consciousness, huge jolts of joy and a massive recharge of the spirit. Whether you want to call them retreats, getaways, artist dates or romantic weekends, they offer support, structure, environment and inspiration for transformation, gratitude building and self-discovery.

There is additional magic when groups of women gather for supportive getaways. Studies have shown that women build their levels of the well-being hormone, oxytocin when they gather for friendship and support. Ladies, imagine what a weekend or full week with your girlfriends could do for you? I assure the husbands and boyfriends out there that women come back from these getaways ready to be more receptive to you too. Everybody wins!

When planning your escape, make sure whatever you choose supports you in building energy. Leave the distractions behind. In today’s world that means setting some boundaries before you go which can include turning off your cell phone and letting others know you are out of reach for a few hours or even days. Getaways that involve sleep deprivation, heavy alcohol and food consumption, gambling and credit card debt are not likely to bring the healing recovery you had in mind. Be careful about your choices and use the following questions to guide you in brainstorming some suitable getaway options.

WHO?

Do I need time alone? Is it time to connect with a special friend or a group? Does my marriage or romantic relationship need time for reconnection? Who would I choose as part of this escape and why? Who can help me pull the details together? Who’ll manage things for me while I escape?

WHAT?

What kind of places and activities have I been dreaming of? What activity level do I seek? What kind travel and accommodations can I afford? Will it be elaborate or something very simple? Will I choose to repeat a pleasant escape from the past?

WHEN?

Will this happen within a week, month, this year or beyond? Do I have vacation time? How long can I hope to be away? What season makes the most sense for what I want to do? Can the others I want to escape with get away when I’m free?

WHERE?

Is there a perfect place that will meet my needs? Am I seeking sun, warmth, water, nature, entertainment, shopping, history, sacred sites, learning or physical activity? What are some perfect places that are easy to reach? Is there someplace I have dreamed of visiting that has not yet become a reality?

WHY?

Examine your intentions fully. What do you really need from this escape?

And just in case you were wondering, I have many suggestions for getaways of all sizes. Here are some of my most favorites, including my comments:

Ohio Favorites

The Inn at Honey Run, Millersburg OH www.innathoneyrun.com

In the heart of Amish country, this has been a favorite place for my annual girls getaway to the Garden Symposium held in late January each year. My husband and I have also enjoyed wonderful romantic getaways here. Fall is absolutely heavenly.

Marblehead Peninsula / Lakeside, OH on Lake Erie www.lakesideohio.com

This historic lakeside community founded in the late 1800s is like stepping back in time. The energy here is incredible and healing. During the summer season (late June-Labor Day) you will pay a fee to enter, which includes admission to abundant educational and arts programming. One of my favorite girlfriend getaways is the Tour of Homes and Craft Show, held this year on July 22. Idlewyld B&B is a great place to stay, and also home base for The Indigo Connection’s annual women’s retreat, set for May 13-15, 2011. It’s also just a short distance from the ferry to Kelley’s Island www.kelleysisland.com where you can enjoy a day or exploring, biking, camping or dining near the water.

Geneva on the Lake / Ohio Wine Region www.visitgenevaonthelake.com

The wineries in this area are outstanding and reminded me of many we visited in Napa and Sonoma. My favorite place to stay is The Lake House Inn & Winery www.thelakehouseinn.com. They have a variety of beautiful rooms and suites, a home-cooked breakfast, a great restaurant and winery and a patio overlooking the water. This is the place for beautiful sunsets. Also recommended is The Eaglecliff Inn www.eaglecliffinn.com. Although not on the water, it has a great front porch for people-watching and a delicious hot breakfast each morning.

Sept. 18 Day Retreat – Beautiful Energy Women who want a great way to get away, enjoy girlfriend time and work on self-improvement will love the day retreat I am facilitating with image expert Dawn Waldrop in Valley City Ohio (southwest Cleveland suburb).
