Primordial Sound Meditation – Joy for a Reluctant Meditator

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Hoping to enjoy Primordial Sound Meditation on my favorite Lakeside rock this summer

On June 3, I participated in a full day seminar to learn Primordial Sound Meditation. Things have been going well in my business and personal life. I did not enroll with conscious thoughts of fixing or healing anything. Sound as a gateway to consciousness had flooded my awareness a lot lately and I was open. Well known by family and friends to be a fidgeter, I was hoping to finally find a way to sit still and be still. Up to this point, my meditations have been either extremely brief or took place while running, walking or doing my yoga practice. In spite of this, I arrived with a simple intention: “Show me what I need for the next phase of my work and my life.”

Our mother-daughter team of certified trainers, Jennifer and Charleene Closshey, were welcoming, present and inspiring. They both exuded health, joy and authenticity. We would soon be enlightened in this technique developed by Deepak Choprak MD and David Simon MD at the Chopra Center.

Primordial sounds are the vibrations of nature. The individualized mantras we would each be given later that morning were developed based upon the soundtrack of the exact time and place of our birth and related to lunar position. We are told that silently chanting these words has the effect of drawing you inwards so that you can fully connect with pure conscious awareness. The most shocking information during this phase of the seminar was the recommendation that we meditate for 30 minutes, 2 times each day. Holy Mackeral Batman – that’s an hour! I was seriously starting to have my doubts about the practicality of this process. At this point, it’s all entirely theoretical. We are given set appointment times to privately meet with one of the instructors to receive our mantras.

Receiving my mantra was a profound spiritual experience. The instructor guided me to chant the words aloud, then we whispered the mantra until told to silently repeat it in my mind. A brief meditation in the instructor’s presence followed. I found myself dropping into the energy of it easily. Tears welled up and my chest heaved as I felt BIG LOVE and intense assurance that I would be supported as I used my mantra. I am filled with gratitude for the gift I have been given! The mantra itself is secret, so don’t ask me to share it.

After a short time meditating in the presence of the instructor, I was asked to bring my attention back so that I might go to another room to continue my practice for another 10-30 minutes on my own. Not sure how this part would go, I was pleased to be able to settle back in again. It flowed and the reconnection brought another flood of tears. Eventually as the tears subsided, I found myself in a rhythm of breath like waves on a beach. Effortless! I meditated 15 minutes before checking my watch. Hurray!

The first experience with my mantra was followed by an exquisite and peaceful lunch break. The group had been instructed to practice silence during this time and I gladly complied. Colors glowed brighter, sounds were more intense and the flavors of my lunch were delicious. Had meditation made this better I wondered?

The seminar reconvened after lunch with plenty of time for participants to share experiences and ask questions. We were reminded that the key to Primordial Sound Meditation is to simply sit still, close the eyes, repeat the mantra and return to the mantra whenever thoughts distract the process. It’s okay if you fall asleep, although to date I have not yet had that happen.

Now back home and fully engaged in my busy life again, I strongly believe this workshop helped me to integrate the ACEP conference experience and gave me a tool to use each and every day. I am happy to report that I have meditated 15-30 minutes, two times each day, every single day for ten days. I am finding that I come to meditation gladly, need less sleep and awaken a bit earlier each morning. One of the most noteworthy benefits has been writing and work productivity during this time. I am on my way with this powerful new habit in spite of reluctance. My hope is to consistently increase to a steady 30 minutes twice a day as I continue. I now feel confident on my prospects for success at this new habit.

I hope ACEP will offer this training again as a post-conference option for the 2014 meeting and invite anyone reading this to consider taking the workshop if you have a chance. It may just open up some great things for your work, life and the world you serve. Go with an open mind and see what happens.

Do People Really Get Results From Teleclasses and Online Coaching?

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Do you ever take a moment to think about how much change has occurred in the past few years? One of the changes you may have been part of is the emergence of teleclasses, group coaching calls, social media support groups, digital audios and YouTube videos. Five years ago if someone would have told me that this would be THE area where coaching clients would be having some amazing successes, I would have quickly volunteered my skepticism. I am a face-to-face person and I like being with real people. I wondered if people would experience the self-care practices and tips with the same intensity as they do in my office or live seminar settings. Fortunately, I am also open minded and was willing to give it a try.

Now that I have facilitated several hundred teleclasses and group calls and well and even more phone coaching sessions, I know these distance-coaching format works just as well as the in-person events. I know that because I have testimonials from live and virtual formats on identical content that I have facilitated during the same time period. A few details might be different from the delivery style, but the results came through and the same! If you are on the fence about enrolling in an online format with me, I also put doubts to rest by offering a guarantee that you will be satisfied.

The Obvious Benefits:
* Group programs serve more people per hour
* No expensive gasoline, winter driving or travel time is involved
* Digital recordings allow participants to get the information at the most convenient time
* Technology for teleclasses and digital coaching services are easy to use, reliable and low cost (sometimes even free!)
* A low per person investment for a high value offering so that everybody gets more for less time, effort and money

Want more proof?
It delights me to share just a few of the most recent comments that came through from participants in my December 2012 Waist Management Virtual Coaching Support Group, which included weekly live calls:

“The variety of support was a key piece for me. Email, Facebook, U Tube, phone conferencing, recorded calls for later play. All at MY convenience. Thank you.”

“The Waist Management program was a fun, supportive and informative program that helped me to be mindful of what I truly wanted to do over a very difficult food season, Christmas. Thank you.”

“I was very committed to this program because of the quality of Betsy’s work, sharing, suggestions and teaching tools that she used to help us achieve a better understanding of health and waist management. I will continue on with everything I’ve learned.”

“This program gave wonderful group support without leaving the comfort of my home. Interacting with others on Facebook and during the live calls was valuable for me. Tapping proved to be vital to my success for this month. A December without Christmas cookies? This is a first. Success is a direct result of a tapping exercise, my desires changed!”

“This was a great program. I loved it. The seed has definitely been planted for me to start fresh in January. If the program continues or there is another one, I want to be included.”

“You always do a great job being a facilitator, you are uplifting and fun with your classes and teleseminars.”

“Betsy’s humor, compassion, and optimism helped me to stay the course. Her program was affordable and offered the structure and daily reminders I needed to stay on my weight reduction plan. I lost 4 pounds in 25 days and have kept that weight off during the holidays.”

“Betsy has the uncanny ability to put her finger right on the issue at hand. With her gentle and kind approach, you feel like you can conquer any problem no matter how big or how small.”

“I found the advice to be practical, down to earth and easy to follow. There was no eccentric eating plans or changes to my lifestyle.”

“It is helpful to me when you mention your own struggles and how you work through them. This program helped though the holidays. I did not stay on track perfectly but to enjoy all the temptations of the holidays within reason was my goal. I liked the drink video. I decided to skip the wine at my next party for a few more cookies!”

“Although Betsy was leading the group, she was going through it & participating in the same way everyone else was. As a participant it is always more comforting to me to know that Betsy really understands our concerns & has shared them. She really lives what she is teaching us.”

Groups Are The Solution: Get on Track and Stay the Course

Monday, December 31st, 2012

If you really want a high and consistent level of success in the New Year, you need the support of a group. People are often surprised to learn that I have been a lifetime member of Weight Watchers for over 21 years. They comment that I don’t need to lose weight. They are even more shocked when I tell them that I still attend the weekly meetings. “Why do you need to do that?” they’ll often say. My response is a simple one – It’s exactly how I have kept my weight in check all these years! I thrive with the support, accountability and resources a group offers.

It’s really easy to get off track when you go it alone. Most diets or change strategies will work for awhile, but then rules start bending, a sense of rebellion can set in or worse yet, a feeling of apathy can take over. It’s the same way for life and business changes too. Without that support, the great things that you accomplish can quickly become un-done.

Two of my most beloved groups to assemble are the Winning at Waist Management and Awaken Your Creativity (Artist’s Way with EFT) groups that have been convening for over 7 years. The early groups were small and met face to face in the Cleveland area. Technology and my courage to use it has now allowed me to offer both groups as teleconferences that include live sessions, YouTube video, audio and email support. What’s exciting to me is that people get results either way. Social media has made this even more exciting. Our December 2012 Waist Management group had members from Japan, Singapore, Australia and Brazil!

Here are just a few of the comments from participants:

Betsy’s humor, compassion, and optimism helped me to stay the course. Her program was affordable and offered the structure and daily reminders I needed to stay on my weight reduction plan. I lost 4 pounds in 25 days and have kept that weight off during the holidays.

You always do a great job being a facilitator. You are uplifting and fun with your classes and teleseminars.

Maybe you have big dreams for 2013? If that’s the case, I urge you to find a group who shares some aspect of your dream and join. Whether it is a business mastermind group, business networking, weight loss, writer’s group, fitness class or a support group for a common challenge, you have a much greater likelihood of real and long-term change. You will also find that it feels like it takes less effort too.

Need help finding a group? I’ll be starting several new group coaching opportunities in the New Year. If you are in the Cleveland area, you can learn about women’s networking, mastermind and holistic business groups meeting soon by joining my mailing list at www.theindigoconnection.com or by becoming my friend on Facebook. You’ll also be excited to learn that a live seminar will take place this Friday Jan. 4 at 7PM where I will offer EFT demonstrations, tips for success at a variety of goals and some special deals for new programs.

Friends from around the globe will be happy to know there are several teleseminars beginning in January 2013 as well. Realizing how powerful group energy can be, it’s something I will always offer. Private coaching has a place when privacy and focus is needed; however groups offer a chance to meet new like-minded friends, to work on shared goals, to share frustrations and to heal pain that we have in common. Groups witness each other in the process, often pointing out the subtle things that need to be seen. Groups are energy and when energy work is added to groups, results are breathtaking.

It would be my honor to have you as a member of one of my groups in 2013. As a professional speaker, I enjoy inspiring existing groups who can benefit from energized new ideas. Need more information? Send me an email at Betsy@theindigoconnection.com.

Create a Powerful Year-End Review Process

Monday, December 17th, 2012

As a coach who follows my own advice, I feel strongly about the year-end wrap-up process. Being a solo entrepreneur makes this even more important. When you don’t have someone else doing your year-end performance review and no longer have a boss imposing goals or deadlines, it can be very helpful to acknowledge what you’ve accomplished. Give yourself a great opportunity to reflect, be grateful and to steer a deliberate course for the year ahead. This review goes way beyond the reports that come off my financial tracking system. As you’ll see, it digs deep into the “why” of my business to help a clearer vision to form for what is next.

Below are 7 key categories I recommend you consider for your review:

Professional and Community Groups You Participated In
• How were you involved?
• How many meetings did you attend?
• What benefits do you personally and professionally receive by being part of the organization?
• Will you plan to continue your activity in the coming year?

Special People in Your Life
• Who was part of your circle of influence this year? Review your calendar, email lists and phone messages for referrals, networking and new client inquiries.
• How about connections on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter?
• Who are you most grateful for?
• If you are a speaker, can you estimate how many audience members heard your message in total?
• Who are your most valuable clients, teachers, mentors and friends?
• Did anyone pass away that you want to remember?

Fun Experiences and Celebrations
• Were there any big celebrations?
• Fun vacations?
• Special nights out?
• Visits from special people

Learning and Growth
• What classes, certifications, teleclasses or workshops were attended?
• Did you earn any new credentials or certifications?
• Which books had the greatest influence on your work or life?
• Which new technologies did you master or at least try?

Pain, Grief and Losses
• Did you suffer any significant changes, losses or set-backs?
• Were there any physical illnesses or injuries that made life rough?
• Are you grieving the loss of a loved one or someone who moved away?

Business and career milestones
• Beyond profit, what can you measure for the year ending?
• How does the year compare with last year, previous history?
• What kind of feedback has come from clients and colleagues about the service you and your business provide?

Serving and Giving
• Where have you volunteered your time and financial support?
• Which charitable organizations have you supported?
• Which boards have you served on?
• How does your business help those who may not be able to afford your services?

Action Steps: Get out a notebook, pen and your calendar from the year just ending. Take time to create a few important categories, and then start tallying up your activities so that you can see the year that just passed from a wider perspective. Take stock of your blessings and feel the good stuff all over again. Use this process to fuel your move forward into the new year. Enjoy!

Taking a Pause for Integrity

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

I woke up today feeling disappointed and very upset as I checked my iPhone for updates. No additional registrations had come in during the night for Wednesday’s EFT class. It was time to pull the plug and cancel. Doing so was admitting failure and also realizing that maybe people don’t even care about energy self-care.

As long as I was facing reality this morning, I decided to step on the bathroom scale. I knew that the number would be up, but when I saw the reading, I recoiled in disgust. I guess there is a very real reason my clothes have been tight. Ouch! Why had I been so careless these past two weeks? With the holidays approaching, is it even possible to imagine that I could burn off those pounds and the 2 extra inches I have gained around my middle? An ugly reality for the author of Winning at Waist Management to admit, but it is the truth.

Pity parties are not my thing, yet here I am feeling embarrassed and out of integrity. Could there be a way to turn this into something to benefit others as I get back on track? Is there a holiday gift wrapped up in this mess?

As I completed my workout on the elliptical trainer this morning in a desperate attempt to change the situation, I thought to myself, “What else would a great coach recommend to turn this situation around?” It was time for a pause, a quiet mind and refreshed focus. As I meditated in my office, the answers were soon flying in.

It occurred to me that I always get great results for my own life and a smaller waistline when I teach what I know. What if I was to begin a series for people to take the waist management journey with me during December when there are so many challenges? Could we all be better off and ahead of our game when 2013 rolls in? Are there other ways I use my talents to help others make the best of this last month of 2012? My calendar said yes. A program could be produced. It could be a series set up as an automatic course with live support and a private FB group too. Would my connections like this? Would they want this sort of a holiday gift?

Here’s the program I have in mind:

1. Begins on Monday Dec. 3 and runs through Dec. 28

2. Participants will receive a daily email with a topic and a resource such as a video, article, tracking tool or self-care process.

3. We will cover a variety of issues such as diet, exercise, emotions, beliefs and handling personal challenges. I will pull from my 21+ years as a lifetime member of weight watchers to bring depth to the discussion.

3. On Wednesdays at 4 PM EST (Dec. 5, 12, 19 and 26), there will be a live 45 minute call for questions, discussion and checking in.

4. A private FaceBook Group will be established for all members of the program as a forum for sharing ideas, support and resources.

5. The cost for the entire 25 day program is ONLY $9.95 (just 40 cents a day!) for those who enroll between now and Friday Nov. 30. After that, the price increases to $39.95 – which is still less than $1.60 per day. Indigo Connection Premium members are invited to participate FREE!

6. All program enrollees will be entered into a drawing for 4 hours of private EFT or energy makeover coaching with me, which can take place any time in 2013.

7. Satisfaction Guaranteed

If you want to be part of the December 2012 Energy Makeover Waist Management Journey, enroll online at http://dec2012waistmanagement.eventbrite.com/ I look forward to taking this journey with you.

Visual Memories from the Lakeside Women’s Retreat (Video)

Monday, May 28th, 2012

A wonderful time was had by all May 18-20 at Lakeside. Warm weather, sun, spontaneity, great food and excellent presentations contributed to the bonding. We did Tai Chi on the dock this year and watched the film Get Real – Wise Women Speak! We played and journaled in the new Energy Makeover Journal too. A highlight of the weekend was getting to see a mamma fox and her five little puppies. Enjoy this photo memory and join us next year when we do it again, May 17-19.

Ignoring My Best Advice

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

In case there was any doubt, I want to assure my readers that even though I am a coach, I am also normal, imperfect and quite human. I make mistakes and goofs just like the rest of you. I even fail to follow my own advice at times.

Today I picked up my journal for the first time in 5 days! I am admitting this to you because journaling is something I recommend in my book and to every client as a habit that brings enormous clarity, healing and growth. Why am I admitting this so honestly today? Because of the clarity I gained as I resumed writing in my journal today. As Homer Simpson would say, “DOH!”

In all seriousness, the main excuse that I failed to journal was because I was on vacation. Although I packed my journal, I never once felt the urge to unpack it. I had slipped into a new routine – very much enjoying warm sun, running on the beach, a chance to sleep in, a new book, movies on my Ipad and just doing nothing. Truly in vacation mode, I never even had a brilliant insight to capture on paper. It’s as simple as that.

The beauty of this is that today I returned to all of my healthy routines including my 5:40 AM alarm, 16 ounces of water upon waking, the Five Tibetan Fountain of Youth Exercises, a breakfast Weight Watchers would be proud to track and making up lost time with my journal. Words poured onto the page as I realized that my good habits are well-established and comfortable. A brief escape to a magical place had merely interrupted my routine in a purely temporary way.

It is okay to break a few rules once in a while. A journal is a fantastic consciousness-building tool, even if you might choose to take a break from it now and then. That’s my best advice for today and I am sticking with it!

Take Yourself AWAY – Rest, Reflect and Connect with Your Inner Wisdom

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

In just two days, I will be boarding a plane to consciously escape routines, work, obligations and this damp Ohio winter. This trip has been on the calendar for 12 months as a priority, but it wasn’t until this week that I so suddenly realized how badly I needed it. You see, I have been one very busy lady in these first 2 months of 2012 — creating a new web site, launching my bestselling book, traveling to Columbus for NSA Protrack professional speaker training, giving new speeches all around town and delivering new classes too. All this new stuff! No wonder my head spins. Funny how someone who teachings the wonders of energy self-care and balance finds herself out of breath more often than she likes! That’s life isn’t it?

What have I learned from all of this that can help you?

Plan your escapes, before you know you will need them. So glad I chose to book my vacation so long ago. Take a look at your calendar TODAY and see what you might choose to plan for a restorative vacation, long weekend or mini-retreat. Hold that date now and make the necessary reservations. This is a worthy act of self-love and self-care.

Pace your goals and accomplishments so that everything doesn’t hit at once. This is a virtue and an art. As I mentioned, it is something I personally need to work on!

Give yourself space to rest, reflect and connect with your wise inner advisor. Creativity flows when you take time to get away. Don’t think this must be a vacation. Morning journal time or a nice walk in nature is ideal for this kind of mini escape too.

Invite others to escape with you. Are you hearing stories of stress and exhaustion from friends or family members you care about? How about instigating something fun and restorative for both of you? Imagine the beautiful bonds of friendship that can be nurtured through escape. Pick up the phone and get this conversation started.

Don’t let an extreme spiritual or physical crisis bring you to the point of finally take that time off. Choose to say “no”, “later” or “next time” and own your calendar when it comes to that escape.

If you are a woman who needs an escape soon, consider joining me May 18-20 at Lakeside on Lake Erie (a magical place I wrote about in my book) for an escape. There’s even an option to come up for a single day in case your life is extra hectic. Send an email to betsy@theindigoconnection.com if you would like the details.

Mastering Fear……by Facing It

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Yesterday I received a very powerful reminder about fear that brought me to attention. After giving a luncheon seminar for the YWCA Leadership Series, one of the audience members came up to me and told me that we had met on June 21, 2010 at a Ladies Who Launch Meeting. I instantly remembered that night too. It was the longest day of the year and Susannah Goulder was the speaker. My long lost friend told me that she remembered how I stood up that night at Susannah’s urging and shared a big dream in front of about 50 witnesses. I had told the group that I was writing a book called Energy Makeover and that I envisioned myself being interviewed about the book on the NBC Today Show with Ann Curry. Boy that was courageous and outrageous! What was I thinking?

While I had long forgotten that moment at the LWL program, this kind woman had only a few moments ago learned that Energy Makeover had not only been published, but also had become an Amazon Best Seller. She was thrilled for me because she had been on this journey with me since June of 2010 and just had to speak up. My heart was warmed by this experience and I was also reminded of all the fear I had to overcome these past 2 years. Maybe I hadn’t been on the Today Show, but so many big dreams had come true.

What if I hadn’t faced my fear when…..

1. Being an author in Next Top Spiritual Author Contest required that I make and submit a video at a time when I did not think I had access to a video camera, tripod, editing software or a clue how edit or post something on YouTube. I learned what I needed to learn, released my need for perfection and did it anyway!

2. I had to ask every soul I knew to watch my imperfect video and vote for Energy Makeover on the Next Top Author Contest web site when I was embarrassed about being out there on YouTube and unfamiliar with Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Social media in general. I learned to navigate social media, build my online network and get over my fear of being judged and criticized for revealing what I really look like and what I believe. I advanced to round 2 in that contest and more importantly created the foundation for future outreach and an online presence I never before imagined.

3. I didn’t advance to the final round in The Next Top Author Contest and felt I wasn’t good enough to be an author. I learned that I needed to hire a coach to get me motivated and inspired to get Energy Makeover completed. My coach, Ann McIndoo inspired me to share my unique message and taught me a great process anyone can use to write a book in 90 days in the midst of a busy life.

4. The Energy Makeover manuscript was finished and I realized that I could not let another soul edit or read it because I was afraid of judgment and criticism. I learned to shift out of the fear by seeking support. After scheduling a brief session with Coach Ann, I took her advice and on that same day hired a professional editor, rallied the help of 14 volunteer editors AND found a publisher. Later I was sensible enough to hire Peggy McColl to coach me on launching a book on Amazon and Holly Matson, a wonderful assistant to manage the book launch project.

5. I was flatly refused by many of the book launch partners I had hoped and assumed would be willing to help with the Energy Makeover Amazon launch. I learned, through my coach Peggy McColl, that I should forge ahead with the launch, keep asking and that it would all work out. That was the day I forgave myself for being such a control freak and decided to put it into God’s hands.

The existence of Energy Makeover and the events of this week would not have happened if I would have stopped at any of the “fear moments” mentioned above. It has always been my job to notice the fear, step into it and realize that fear simply brings forth an opportunity to learn and grow.

I must also admit that Energy Psychology and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) have been part of my fear-busting arsenal at every step of this journey. When I find the intensity building, I now more quickly recognize it and begin clearing it.
While fear can be very isolating, I also know to connect to a higher power and the outside world for help and expertise when I feel like shutting down.

There is a fork in the road at each terrifying moment that gives you the choice to isolate or connect. Connection is the only answer. Where there is connection, there lies a happy ending.

Practice Time: Ask yourself each day if there is something you aren’t doing because you are afraid of judgment, criticism, or some other nasty outcome? Have the courage to examine what you are really afraid of, use a self-care process like EFT to soothe your feelings, take a moment to pray as you ask who might be out there as a resource for you. In every case of fear, there is a resource waiting to respond to your need. Your burden will become so much easier once you are aligned with the intention to move forward.
