Wise Words From Old Ladies

Monday, April 15th, 2013

Isn’t it interesting that little old ladies are stirring up my life lately. I spent most of Saturday with a large group of women as part of MetroHealth’s EveryWoman event. I challenged the audience to find a great older lady as a mentor and to develop a relationship with her to help your own aging process. I explained that my favorite feisty mentors are not related to me, but have a few things in common – they are widows, they stick to their values and they have put their fears aside. Widowhood is my worst-case scenario, and also a likely possibility when statistically women outlive their husbands by several years. Finding active and joyful widows like my mentors Judy and Margaret give me faith that my later years will be awesome no matter what. On Saturday it was heartwarming to be approached by so many happy widows who personally stopped at my book table for a hug and a kind word. More mentors for my team!

Many of my friends also know that I have been immersing myself in study of the life of the 12th Century German nun, Saint Hildegard of Bingen lately. I suppose this is another part of my obsession with older women. The more I read about Hildegard and the translation of her actual words, I feel as though she is a time traveler who visits me in spirit. We are so deeply connected it puzzles me how this could be so strong when we live in such radically different times. She has so much wisdom to share as I realize my journey with her has just begun. It is no accident that the Pope finally named Hildegard a Saint and Doctor of the Church on Oct. 8, 2012.

Yesterday I took a 4 mile run while listening to Hildegard’s music on my headphones. It was haunting, calming and so beautiful. As I returned to my desk, I found the following quote that gave me chills:

“But although I heard and saw these things, because of doubt and a low opinion (of myself) and because of the diverse sayings of men, I refused for a long time the call to write, not out of stubbornness but out of humility, until weighed down by the scourge of God, I fell onto a bed of sickness.”
(Scivias, Preface) – Hildegard of Bingen

Hildegard lived to be 81, although she is described in many historical accounts as having been a sickly person. She was considered sickly when she entered the Benedictine abbey at the age of 8 and had several near-death episodes throughout her long life. She admitted that her greatest times of illness came when she had mystical visions and messages from God, but failed to share that truth with others. When I read that quote, I thought to myself, “Me too!”

Do you realize how much energy it requires to hide your authentic self and your truth when you fear that the rest of the world might not agree? All that hiding can make you sick. It has happened to me and through Hildegard’s time travel and mentorship, I too have learned that it has to stop.

I have been hiding a few things out of fear. There are things I know that you also need to know, but I haven’t shared them because I didn’t think you were ready to hear them. Hildegard tells me it is time to speak up anyway.

The power of health, healing, success and joy comes from the energy of love in the form of connection. This connection is possible with humans, ALL living things and also with what you might consider non-living matter. You have the capacity to build your energy by simply taking a micro-moment to stop, notice and appreciate what’s around you. You need not use your eyes, although eye contact sure makes it pop! Take time today to appreciate the world around you and especially those wonderful old ladies in your life. We all need the wisdom of a feisty woman to help us live in joyful authenticity.

Visual Memories from the Lakeside Women’s Retreat (Video)

Monday, May 28th, 2012

A wonderful time was had by all May 18-20 at Lakeside. Warm weather, sun, spontaneity, great food and excellent presentations contributed to the bonding. We did Tai Chi on the dock this year and watched the film Get Real – Wise Women Speak! We played and journaled in the new Energy Makeover Journal too. A highlight of the weekend was getting to see a mamma fox and her five little puppies. Enjoy this photo memory and join us next year when we do it again, May 17-19.

A Lift from Love Songs

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Ever have one of those days when you felt unappreciated, alone and just plain sad inside? That was me last Friday. A series of small things like cancelled appointments and news that only 3 people had registered for an upcoming workshop had somehow convinced me that I wasn’t valuable or appreciated. At the end of a very busy week, my spirit sunk very low.

What to do?

Pity parties aren’t my thing. I knew the answer, but still held doubt in the pit of my stomach. I needed to move and be out in nature. I reluctantly changed into my running clothes and laced up my sneakers.

Next was the challenge of choosing the right music on my iPod to guide my thoughts and running pace for the next 30 minutes. I made an effortless selection – Love songs! Why? – These were the most recent group of songs added to my iPod. I had heard many of them quite by accident last Saturday night on a cool jazz radio program and had decided they were worth buying on iTunes.

So my run began with Lovesong by Adele. I can only describe this song as sweet and pure love. A gentle caress of heart and soul in a song. I told my mind to imagine that these lyrics were sung by an angel to me. I could certainly sing each version back to my angels.

Next up was Sade singing Nothing Can Come Between Us. I imagined her voice as the strong feminine side of God speaking to me.

As my pace quickened, I’ll Be There by the Jackson 5 came next, with tiny Michael’s voice from 1971. I imagined this voice to be coming from a God who chose a child-like form to be near me. The words and melody connected me again with the world. My running became smoother, stronger and almost effortless.

Rounding the bend for the last mile, the song Fantasy by Earth Wind and Fire came on to send me home. What an amazingly joyful song! How had I missed these lyrics and the beautiful message always there since 1977?

As you glide in your stride
With the wind as you fly away
Give a smile from your lips and say
Are you free, yes I’m free
And I’m on my way…..

Our voices will ring together
Until the twelfth of never
We all will live love together as ONE

“Oh my!”, I thought to myself as I returned home. That was one of the most refreshing and uplifting runs I’ve ever taken! God surely speaks through songs and lyrics. I had become happily reconnected to my spirit, body and the planet once again.

Would this process work for you during a low time too?
Find 3-5 of your favorite old love songs and listen to them imagining that the voice of God is singing to you. Do you believe the words? Imagine yourself singing these words back to God. Which perspective brings you greater peace? Believe you have the power to connect and live as ONE.

Don’t Fear The Reaper

Friday, April 6th, 2012

When I first started dating my husband back in 1979, he was perplexed that a fairly intelligent chemistry major like me absolutely loved a song by Blue Oyster Cult called Don’t Fear the Reaper. Perhaps you know the song I’m talking about – it’s the one Will Ferrell made famous on Saturday Night Live in a skit that involved “MORE COWBELL!!!”

George and I have laughed about it many times over the years, yet he still becomes clearly annoyed every time I turn up the volume when it plays on the radio.

It wasn’t until this week, that my attraction to this song started making obvious sense. I do not and have never feared death. My belief system has everything to do with not being afraid and in living fully by trusting that there is eternal life. My Christian upbringing gave me the foundation for this belief system, yet over the years I have also come to know that the Source of all life loves us and lives within each of us. Why would any soul be allowed to die?

Releasing the fear of death is the path to more vibrant and joyful living. Encounters with the spirit world and with God have assured me of this time and time again. There is nothing but love and healing on the other side. That’s the truth!

Don’t Fear the Reaper played on the car radio the other day as I was driving with my husband and I was finally moved to ask him why he found the song so annoying (as I turned up the volume) . His response was,

“It’s that guitar solo! What a cacophony of nothing!”

I just burst out laughing, making a mental note to work that beautiful quote into one of my stories for a speech someday. How funny that it took 28 years of marriage to get clear on our differences about that song.

The lyrics AND the guitar solo work just fine for me. I’m sticking to my opinion and the song’s message of life eternal. You can listen to my old favorite through the link below.

Connecting with the Audience by Revealing a Secret

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Have you ever been on stage trying to establish a connection with an audience? It can be especially challenging if you don’t know much about them in advance. Sometimes is just can’t be avoided, however you still need to find a way to reach them in those precious first minutes so that you can release your nervousness and get them to pay attention.

I had the honor of being chosen as one of the workshop presenters at the COSE Small Business Conference on Oct. 20 at the IX Center. It is a huge event with 6 or 7 concurrent workshops given during each time slot. A speaker cannot anticipant who will attend or how many for that matter. I was fortunate to have a full room of very diverse participants and I was excited, but also a little nervous. This would be the first time I had ever given this presentation, and I decided to open it by sharing one of my quirks with the audience so we could just get it out of the way. It was an amazing thing! Sharing this short story of less than 1 minute, I relaxed and had a ball leading the workshop. Maybe there’s something you need to tell your audience to connect with them and clear the air? Here’s the video so you can see for yourself how it went.

Even Bloopers Can Be a Good Thing

One of the things I have learned during the past year is that people love to see my pets in videos and they also like when I don’t edit out all of the imperfections. Here’s a 12 second example of something that happened today!

Invite Deeper Connection (with video)

Friday, June 24th, 2011

We are social beings and our connections to other living creatures are perhaps the most precious aspect to life. Don’t miss out on the enormous energetic power of connection – both for your business life and beyond. How might you cultivate deeper connection, stronger bonds, more effective leadership and greater support than you ever thought possible? Tweets and small talk are not enough! Going deep requires you to be an initiator, may be risky and can result in rejection. Do it anyway, Ask new questions, help people share more and reveal your deeper thoughts to others too. Everyone loves a non-judgmental listener. Get out of the shallow end.
